Commentary from April 5, 2003
After the last Mike strip (#28), I realized that this Mike character had a lot of potential for humour. Mike is one of the few characters that just crystallized in my head — the look, the personality, everything — he hasn’t changed at all from the first strip to the latest. Because of that, Mark crystallized as well — he has to be the opposite of Mike. The Mike strips write themselves. If there is any thread that I could do indefinately, it’s the Mike thread.
This is one of the early uses of the “cut a panel and use it twice or more” technique that I use to death nowadays. I love the subtle change in expression between the two panels. One thing that’s really tragic is Anne’s fashion sense. One day, I will be brave and buy a female fashion magazine and make all the women in the comic stylish, like Diizeru did for Dr. Lovetalk in #33.
